The Oxford English Dictionary should be ashamed, but whatevs.

On a brighter note, I made a version of my Gramma’s Ham and Bean soup, but without ham, because I can’t eat it.

So, I used one of those smoked turkey legs for the meat product. It was similar, but I still feel like something was missing. I also added a lot more veggies and some Jugo because why not?

I’ll have to thank Pati for that culinary secret.

First, take all those vegetables above (carrots, rutabaga, turnips, parsnip, celery, and onion) and prepare them appropriately – as in wash, peel, cut them, etc. Put that stuff into your Gramma’s Dutch Oven with some water.
Voilà ! Now, add just enough water to cover with minced garlic, salt, pepper, and some bay leaves. I used fresh ones, but dried is fine, too.

Side note: bring this to a boil and then turn down to simmer for about 30-minutes.
Remove the celery leaves and big chunks of stuff.
Debone the meat and throw the meat back in sans the gristle and bones and ligaments and gross stuff.
Add some cans of Great Northern Beans or Navy Beans or some of both … doesn’t really matter.
Now, taste it. Adjust the seasonings. I added some Cypriot finishing salt. Beans make salt disappear.
Then let this concoction cook on a decent simmer for another 30-minutes or so.

And just like that … actually about an 1.5 hours later … you have something similar to my Gramma’s ham and bean soup, but fully accessible to Jews, Muslims, and people allergic to pork.

PS And yes, I know…every time I cook, I can hear Anne Burrell yelling at me about my knife cuts.
Merry (it’s almost the) Holidays from the Ukraine!
This version is bad-ass, too.
And this is how America whitewashes the history of the cultural appropriation to market the AWESOMENESS of NEW ‘MERICA! #CANTFIXSOMEONETHATDOESNTWANTTOBEFIXED. #WoW

Frankly, there is no denying that their version is a bad-ass à la chapelle-style rendition of the Ukrainian classic. #USAF
